MLM Success – Coaching 101 Why the Right Coach Can Make All The Difference!!

One of the best feelings that I’ve ever experienced was the sense of accomplishment that happened to me while playing middle school basketball. The position that I played was point guard and it was my job to bring the ball up court and set up the plays that the coach called. I was the best ball handler on the team and I welcomed any challenge to try and take the ball away from me.
My coach with his trained eye picked up on a glaring weakness in my game, now up to this point it had not been exploited so I’d not seen it myself. So one day coach calls me over after practice and he says to me you need to work on your left hand, I said why? What’s wrong with it? He said to me you favor your right because that’s your strength but any coach worth his title will spot that and try and take it away, which will make you less effective and hurt our chances at winning.
Now mind you I was still very young and quite immature at the time so I didn’t understand the concept until coach and I played a little one on one and he began to cut off my right side and my weakness became apparent even to me at that point.
So from there we began extra practice sessions specifically targeted at making my left hand as potent as my right. It got a little better but he told me my left needed to become more “instinctive” and I still didn’t quite understand, so he asked me to name a couple of my favorite players (now for you youngsters who read this I’m going to date myself a bit with these names) so I gave it some thought and the first name because of his “handles” was Isaiah Thomas then Magic Johnson also Norm Nixon.
So he just happened to have some recorded tapes of a couple of L.A. Laker and Detroit Piston games and what he pointed out to me while watching was how effortlessly these basketball wizards used both hands without thought or hesitation and he further explained how ineffective they would be if they only had the use and comfort of one hand.
It took some very intense practice, getting used to and a couple of months but I eventually began to see huge progress and I also began to be able to tell when an opposing player had the same weakness that I had previously and I was able to use that to our teams advantage.
Something else I’d like to point out, because my weakness became a strength my anxiety level in that area decreased and I was able to really narrow my focus on the play, making sure everyone else was on the same page. In times past I would be a bit distracted because I wasn’t as sure or comfortable using my left hand so my focus was split and I wasn’t always as effective but because I had a coach and I WAS COACHABLE , I was able to overcome a weakness and we won some games that we probably would have otherwise lost.
How is this related to business? In this industry people get paid to “Coach” or “Mentor” because for many who are brand new to the online world the learning curve is huge, the vastness of the internet can be very intimidating and things change very rapidly. So the most efficient way to reduce your tenure in the”Internet School of Hard Knocks” is to have coaches/mentors who have a track record of success and achieved at least the level you would like to achieve yourself.
The benefits of having a coach:
-
A set of trained eyes that can spot weaknesses that you may not be aware of.
-
If someone has agreed to be your coach then they see the hidden potential inside of you.
-
Coaches can push you to your next several levels.
-
Coaching can help you develop focus.
-
Leadership and someone to FOLLOW (very important to have an example of what success looks like)
What to look for in a Coach/Mentor:
-
A great coach will have some jewelry (a championship ring or two, three or four) a proven record of success.
-
A great coach still has a coach or has been coached/mentored by another great coach and will share that freely.
-
A great coach has a great team to coach.
-
Coaches are teachers and will display a passion to teach/train others for success.
-
Leadership. Are others following this person? If no one is following them then it’s quite possible they are just someone taking a long walk by themselves..lol.

Love this post Roger. There is so much we can learn from sport about business just as you have shown so well here. Also fantastic that you are relaying a personal story here. Always makes for such interesting reading. Being coachable is a key requirement for success!

I love sports, Roger. I really related to your story. My son is 12 and a left hander, and he was point guard on his team this year. He said to me 2 weeks ago, right when the season ended, “Dad, I'm going to spend the summer working on right hand layups.”
Having a good business coach can make all the difference in your business growth. Great article, Roger!

This is a really good article….and a good story also.

Hi Roger,
One of the most important things for success is to have a mentor, somebody who lead you through obstacles and who advice you when you need. Great post!
Have a great day!
Martin Micka
Thanks for your comments Martin, and your right it's all about having someone show you the way!!
Thanks and welcome Kitara, I don't mind sharing something personal especially if I think it will be helpfull to someone.
Ron, great name that's also my older brother's name. You are right all the great ones do have coaches.
J, I love the character bro, thanks for your comments. Those are a couple of my alltime favs. I have many from that era…
That was an interesting time in my life Stephen, I really thought that I'd be the next Magic Johnson or Isaiah Thomas. I spent soo much time working on my game to try and perfect something that I really loved, now I'm doing the same in my business..
Thanks Garret, especially if you are brand new in this industry, that would probably be the best investment you can make initially.
Great analogy, Roger. The right coach can (and generally will) multiply any efforts you put forth to better your “game” exponentially, regardless of what arena you're in… Sports, business or otherwise.
Solid post.
Garrett
Roger,
Awesome story, and great analogy. It’s all about getting out of that comfort zone and improving what needs improving to grow. Having a coach/mentor will certainly help you to realize what you need to work on the most.

Awesome post and very inspirational story! In order to succeed, we must first learn to follow and listen to those that have already experienced it before. It is like growing up and our parents trying to teach us, but we all know many times we dont want to listen. It is in those lessons, if not by our parents, but by our teachers, our coaches or mentors that we grow as individuals to experience the success that they themselves have accomplished.

Wow I’m glad I came upon this site. I found this on my coach page. Awesome stuff here. Thx for doing this.
Awesome stuff here .. I got this off of my coaches page.. its so true to have a great coach because they know what it takes to move forward…
I definitely agree with you on this, Roger. Having a coach or mentor is like having an inspirational role model. We have to pick an appropriate role model to teach us how to be a successful person like him or her.
